8.0 Mm Proximal Femoral Screw (P.F.N)

The 8.0 mm Proximal Femoral Screw is a large-diameter lag screw specifically designed for use in Proximal Femoral Nailing (PFN) systems, which are commonly used to treat intertrochanteric and subtrochanteric fractures of the femur. This screw is made from high-strength titanium alloy or stainless steel and is engineered to provide firm anchorage into the femoral head, delivering excellent axial and rotational stability.
The screw typically features a partially threaded, cannulated design, allowing for guided insertion over a guidewire. Its robust construction ensures load-sharing between the bone and implant, while the threads provide secure purchase in cancellous bone of the femoral head. In dual-screw PFN systems, the 8.0 mm screw functions as the primary load-bearing lag screw, working in combination with a 6.4 mm anti-rotation screw or similar.
This screw is essential for maintaining compression across the fracture site and preventing femoral head collapse during healing.
- Intertrochanteric femur fractures:- Serves as the main lag screw in PFN systems to stabilize the femoral head and neck.
- Subtrochanteric fractures:- Provides firm anchorage and axial compression in complex proximal femur fractures.
- Unstable and comminuted fractures:- Delivers both rotational and axial support when paired with an anti-rotation screw or helical blade.
- Osteoporotic fractures in elderly patients:- Large diameter offers strong purchase in weakened cancellous bone.
- High-energy trauma cases:- Suitable for fractures resulting from severe impacts requiring high-load bearing implants.
- Dual-screw PFN systems:- Functions as the main compression screw in conjunction with a 6.4 mm anti-rotation screw for enhanced biomechanical stability.
- Early mobilization protocols:- Provides strong fixation that allows patients to begin weight-bearing earlier post-surgery.
