Supracondylar Nail

The Supracondylar Femur Nail is a specialized intramedullary implant designed for the fixation of distal femoral fractures, particularly in the supracondylar region, just above the knee joint. It is typically inserted retrograde through the intercondylar notch of the femur and passed proximally into the medullary canal. This approach allows for stable, load-sharing fixation while preserving the soft tissue envelope around the distal femur.
The nail is made from biocompatible materials such as titanium or stainless steel, and is available in various lengths and diameters to suit a range of patient anatomies. It features multiple distal locking holes in different planes to secure small or comminuted distal fragments, providing both rotational control and axial stability. Proximal locking options are also included to prevent nail migration and maintain alignment during healing.
This nail is particularly useful in cases where plating may not be ideal, such as in osteoporotic bone, open fractures, or polytrauma.
- Distal femur fractures (supracondylar):-Including both extra-articular (AO/OTA 33-A) and some intra-articular fracture patterns.
- Periprosthetic distal femoral fractures:-Particularly in cases where fixation around a total knee prosthesis is required and lateral plating is not feasible.
- Comminuted and segmental distal femur fractures:- Offers secure fixation in cases with poor cortical support.
- Osteoporotic distal femur fractures:- Especially in elderly patients, where locking screws through the nail provide reliable fixation.
- Polytrauma patients:- Enables quick, minimally invasive stabilization with less soft tissue disruption.
- Nonunion or malunion of distal femoral fractures:- Acts as a revision tool when previous constructs have failed.
- Distal femoral osteotomies:- Can be used for fixation post-correction of deformity.
- Patients with poor soft tissue envelope:- Retrograde nailing minimizes lateral dissection, ideal for compromised skin or prior surgeries.
