INNER HEAD

+ Description
The inner head of a modular bipolar prosthesis is the key articulating component that fits onto the femoral stem and sits within the polyethylene liner of the outer bipolar shell. Typically made from high-strength stainless steel or cobalt-chromium alloy, the inner head provides a smooth, durable surface that allows for rotational movement inside the bipolar cup while also contributing to the dual mobility mechanism of the prosthesis.
This modularity allows surgeons to select the most appropriate head size during surgery for accurate restoration of leg length, joint stability, and range of motion.
+ Indications
- Femoral neck fractures in elderly patients where acetabular cartilage is intact.
- Use in hemiarthroplasty procedures requiring modularity for intraoperative adjustment.
- Hip arthroplasty revisions, where a new inner head is needed without replacing the entire prosthesis.
- Cases requiring anatomical restoration of hip biomechanics (e.g., leg length, offset).
- Patients with high risk of dislocation — the dual mobility feature helps reduce that risk.
+ Key Features
- Multiple diameter options (22mm, 28mm, etc.) for compatibility with various stem tapers.
- Designed to articulate within the polyethylene liner of the bipolar outer head, reducing wear on the acetabulum.
- Highly polished surface for smooth articulation and reduced friction.
- Secure taper fit with the femoral stem (e.g., 12/14 or 10/12 taper).
- Contributes to dual mobility and improved joint kinematics.
