Elastic Nail

The Elastic Nail is a flexible intramedullary fixation device designed primarily for pediatric long bone fractures and selected adult fractures. Also known as Titanium Elastic Nails (TENs), these implants are typically made of titanium alloy, which offers excellent elasticity, biocompatibility, and shape memory. The nail's flexibility allows it to be inserted in a curved, pre-bent shape, providing three-point fixation within the medullary canal.
Elastic nails are inserted retrograde or antegrade through small incisions near the metaphysis of long bones. They are available in various diameters and lengths, and are typically used in pairs to ensure adequate axial and rotational stability. Their minimally invasive technique preserves the periosteal blood supply, reduces soft tissue trauma, and promotes quicker recovery.
- Pediatric femoral shaft fractures:- Most common indication, particularly in children aged 5–12 years.
- Pediatric tibial shaft fractures:- Especially for stable or length-maintained fractures.
- Pediatric humerus fractures:- Diaphyseal or supracondylar fractures where flexible fixation is beneficial.
- Forearm fractures (radius and ulna):- Particularly in children and adolescents.
- Polytrauma in children:- Enables quick stabilization with minimal surgical exposure.
- Pathologic fractures in children:- Used in bones weakened by cysts or benign lesions.
- Nonunion or delayed union in select pediatric cases:- As a revision tool when conservative treatment fails.
- Some adult fractures:- Such as clavicle, olecranon, or fibula fractures where minimal hardware and elastic fixation are sufficient.
